Protected Areas

As a part of the ongoing initiative for testing the management effectiveness of the Protected Areas (PAs) of the country using Rapid Assessment and Prioritization for Protected Area Methodology (RAPPAM), the network of PAs of Kerala state were assessed. After a preliminary field survey, a workshop was organized at the state Forest Department head quarters, Thiruvananthapuram to validate the findings with consultation of the PA managers. This enabled to narrow down the pressures and threats faced by the PAs across the state. A draft report containing the findings and recommendations has been prepared.

Similar exercises are planned for the year 2007 to corroborate the findings of earlier assessments done in the states of Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. Altogether, the results of these exercises would enable to devise effective conservation strategies for the PAs of these three states which form an important part of the priority ecoregions for WWF-India.

RAPPAM workshop for validation of earlier findings was organized on 08 Feb 2007 at Gangtok, Sikkim and on 12 Feb 2007 at Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh.
