Highlights of the findings achieved in the project

The baseline on coral monitoring was set up at three islands (Kavaratti, Kadmat and Agatti) of Lakshadweep. The status of coral growth in all the three islands is found to be good (80.8%) with domination of Acropora (47.3%) with greater diversity followed by non Acropora spp. (33.5%). Twenty three genera of corals are reported with two new records to the Lakshadweep islands. Other benthic communities observed are polychaetes, clams, barnacles, starfishes, sea cucumbers, sponges, octocorals (Alcyonians and Nephthids dominate more than the gorgonids) and black corals. No apparent bleaching and COT related mortality of coral was observed in the three islands. Database on the benthic, bibliographic and historic information has been setup.
