One of the priorities of tiger conservation today is to secure the areas where populations of tigers are surviving. These areas are mainly designated protected areas such as National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries, and Tiger Reserves.

Owing to a number of reasons these areas are not adequately equipped to ensure proper protection to forest and wildlife. The main requirement of the PAs are mobility for patrolling, uniforms for the staff, camping facilities, communication equipment, training, staff welfare etc,. Some part of requirements is being met by the Govt agencies, the remaining resources to some extent is being provided largely by WWF-India and other NGO's.

Keeping in view such a need of the PAs to enhance the management capabilities, WWF initiated a programme to support PAs having a sizeable populations of tigers and its prey species.

Through this programme, WWF-India renders support to the Government to save one of the most charismatic species of our country, which is also our National Animal. Prior to supporting any PA, an assessment of area is conducted to evaluate the requirements, in consultation with the forest department and the local NGO's.

On the basis of the assessment a support package is offered to the State Government and WWF support is initiated only after receiving approvals from the concerned State Forest Departments As per the current status 31 PAs have been supported by WWF. The support mainly consists of vehicles, communication equipment, Field gear, Staff welfare, funds for intelligence, water harvesting structures etc. Since the inception of the programme a total of appx 15,00,000 USD have been spent by WWF for providing support to PAs.

This programme has been in operation for the last six years and is funded by the global network of WWF.
