Vulnerability Assessment of People,Livelihoods and Ecosystems in the Ganga Basin

Vulnerability Assessment of People,Livelihoods and Ecosystems in the Ganga Basin

Assessment of vulnerability to climate change mainly involves research into the exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity levels of a system in the presence of a specific impact, for example, rising frequency of floods. Vulnerability is a dynamic concept, as exposure to climate change and the capacity to cope with those impacts shifts across temporal and spatial scales. The governing factors of vulnerability assessment studies mainly include scale of assessment; the kind of impact or hazard being considered; and the target group or system being assessed.

Panda, Jan - Apr 2010

WWF-India in collaboration with Enviro Legal Defense Firm has carried out legal analysis of the Civil writ petition number 337 of 1995 filed by WWF-India commonly known as the CEL or National Parks/Sanctuaries case and Civil writ petition number 202 of 1995 commonly known as the Godavarman Case.

These cases are being heard for over thirteen years and are a part of what is termed as "continuing mandamus", whereby the Courts, rather than passing final judgments, keep on passing orders and directions with a view to monitor the functioning of the executive. The impact of these orders on PA management, forestry sector, forest management and governance are often not known by many environment and human rights groups or even government agencies. Existing methods of reporting such judgments and orders are often inadequate and at times do not reach the concerned groups. It was thus felt that a comprehensive analysis of the various orders and interventions of these cases should be carried out and their impacts/ implications on the ground are assessed.

Sustainable Goods and Services in the 21st Century

In many ways, 2009 will prove to be a historic year. Against the backdrop of the ongoing financial crisis, the inauguration of a new administration in the USA, the increasing global influence of emerging economies such as India and China, and the muchanticipated UNFCCC climate conference to be held in Copenhagen in December, it seems certain that the global economic and political landscape will have changed significantly by the end of the year. The Alternative Urban Futures Report

The Alternative Urban Futures Report
More than half of the world’s population is now urbanised but India is still largely a rural country (65-70% of the population still lives in villages). Indeed, it has been a very reluctant urbaniser compared to other Asian countries. However, as economic development shifts increasing numbers away from subsistence agriculture, the country is about to embark on a period of rapid urbanisation.

The second volume of this year’s Panda brings into focus how life is interconnected. From conservation of animals and their habitat to connectivity shared by creatures and people. The Khangchendzonga landscape is a unique place of conservation, spiritual and community importance. The rapid and vast misuse of this landscape makes it threatened and largely fragmented. It is with hope that WWF-India perseveres in its goal to safeguard the species and livelihoods of people that make the Khangchendzonga landscape precious. Download your free copy here.
