WWF recognised the urgent need to protect these fragile and unique high altitude wetlands in the Himalayas, and has been striving for the sustainable management of these wetlands through policy-formulation for better management practices, monitoring climate impacts, reducing the impacts of tourism and other anthropogenic activities and furthering demonstrations of community-based wetland management practices.

Since the Indian Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police have a major presence in these states, their support and cooperation is being sought to achieve conservation goals in the region. Special orientation programmes are being organised for the armed forces and they are being involved in the management of the lakes.
