In recent times airports have emerged as gateways for the trafficking of high-value wildlife articles across the globe. According to Runway to Extinction, a report published by the ROUTES (Reducing Opportunities for Unlawful Transport of Endangered Species) Partnership in May 2020, India is amongst the top three countries in terms of use of airline sector for wildlife trafficking. Therefore, curbing wildlife trafficking through airports is crucial for securing the future of wildlife.
The project- Deterring and Disrupting wildlife trafficking in the air transport sector in India – has been jointly developed and implemented by UNEP, TRAFFIC, WWF-India and WCCB (Wildlife Crime Control Bureau) with support from CUSTOMS and CISF.
Under the project, awareness and capacity enhancement tools have been developed and shared to help enforcement agencies curb the trafficking of wildlife contrabands through airports in India.
