JUMPING RIGHT IN

Mr. Lohit YT, Specialist – Rivers and Wetlands at the WWF-India Bengaluru office, discovered a new jumping spider species in the foothills of Nandi Hills, Karnataka. The species belongs to the rare Genus Colopsus, under the larger Salticidae family. Only 2 species were previously identified in India from this genus, making this a very rare find from early 2022 even more special!

Discovered near the Arkavathi River, the new species will now be recognized as the Colopsus arkavathi. The discovery has also been published in the acclaimed scientific journal Arthropoda Selecta – with co-authors including Dr. John T.D. Caleb, Dr. Abhijith APC, and Dr. Maria Packiam.
